Yes Buy It.This was the perfect backpack solution for lunches... ultralight, very durable, very tasty, and good calories for the weight. There were no broken crackers. They are a little large for me, one is survival and two are too much, but then I weigh 120 lbs and eat accordingly. I highly recommend them whether you are backpacking or adding them to a survival kit. 5close to "real" pilot breadTried three different brands of "pilot bread" crackers, and this was the closest to the Real Thing. Though they're called "Sailor Pilot Bread", I forgot to look on the can and track down whether they are, indeed, made by the company that makes real "Sailor Pilot Bread", which we used to buy off the shelves at Safeway stores in Alaska. These are super well preserved in their can with anhydrous thingamees to keep them dry. Definitely not stale, which was a problem with the others. 4pretty expensive for what they arepretty expensive for what they are. but if you want ready to eat crackers in a heavy duty waterproof hard to destroy container these fit the bill. they taste fine to me. a little harder than "normal" crackers with a little less flavor, but actually good considering their intended purpose and shelf life. I might buy one of these to have on hand just in case, but realistically you'd be better off just storing normal crackers and replacing them as needed. 3Perfect item for our storm preps.Having had these for awhile (I bought the 6-can half case), I finally opened a can to try them. I find them quite good. Midway between a cracker and a cookie, the taste is good. Not salty. Not sweet. Thickish, with a good texture. Excellent to put a spread on. I am using strawberry jam today. It makes an excellent snack. I am pleased with these Pilot Bread crackers, and just ordered a second 6-can package. This is a perfect item for long term storage for storm preps, or to use day to day.Ordering by the half case spreads the cost out, reducing the per can price. 5Good for their purpose, even if a little expensive.I just opened a can of these crackers this week and have been trying them out in various meals. My observations:Purpose: They are not generally intended for casual eating; rather, they are a durable, storage-food option. They serve this function well, I think. The can is sturdy. The crackers are densely packed, there were no breaks or powdered bits. An O2 absorber and a desiccation pack were included. The marketing material says the product has a shelf life of ~20 years and I see no reason to doubt this. However, I always err on the side of caution and plan to rotate out long-term food storage about 1/2 through its expected shelf life. So I would feel especially comfortable storing these crackers unopened for 8-10 years without worry.Taste and edibility: The crackers are about 4 inches in diameter. They are much more dense than a saltine, but are much easier to eat than regular (traditional) hardtack. Consequently, they hold up firmly when broken into soups and chili, can be used for spreads (e,g, peanut butter) but don t require a lot of work to chew. The taste is like a mild saltine, with just a hint of the butteriness of a Ritz cracker. However, they are not designed to be a tasty snacking cracker. To get that kind of taste requires more oils/fats in the ingredients which would compromise their long-term storage. So yes, if you are expecting the more table-ready flavor of Ritz or Triscuit, these will taste bland. But that is not what canned pilot bread was designed to be.Cost: If you are looking for a regular cracker to eat as a snack, and just want it to store for 6-12 months, there are many options out there in the snack aisle. If you want cheaper pilot bread, you can find the uncanned version and save a lot of money. However, if you want a grain product that has a shelf life possibly up to 20 years that requires no preparation (no added water, no heating) beyond using a can opener then this product is a good way to go. Yes, you can definitely make your own hardtack much cheaper, but it will be less pleasant to eat, and you will have to do your own packaging. Nevertheless, these crackers are still a little pricey, so I reduced the product rating one star for the cost. Conclusions: a good product for its purpose. Expensive based on the caloric value, but you re also buying durability here. Finally, because the nutritional info isn t easy to find, I ll include a photo of the back of the can. 4Good stuffOpened a can to see what I'd spent so much for: Crackers! Like water crackers on steroids, very big and pale. I was surprised none were broken, though a few were edge chipped. (No surprise if you'd seen the box!) Tasty, though, and a consistency like the old C-ration cracker only much bigger and maybe twice as thick, crunchy, rather than those mealy MRE things. I hope they age well as I'm going to order more to set aside to go with my freeze dried soups and stews. Toasted a couple over a fire and slathered them with (canned) butter. Really good. 5Canned for storageSo these are not priced for opening now and eating. If you want to eat pilot bread now, buy the uncanned version. The canned pilot bread is for long term storage for emergencies. And the advantage of canned pilot bread is that if you have to use it, it requires no cooking or water to eat it, unlike most emergency food. An excellent way to prepare for the unexpected. The mountain house version is cheaper per weight, but it's in one huge can, where as this is two much smaller cans (about the size of large soup cans), which are much easier to transport or store in small places.Reason for 4 stars is the lack of manufacture or expiration date on the cans. The ad says these kinds of pilot bread is good for 30 years, BUT actually doesn't come out and say THIS product is good for X years. Weasel wording. 4No Way to re-seal the canA tiny tin, Too much money for what you get. Also , once it is opened There is No Way to re-seal the can. Wont be geting this again. 1I thought it would be like English Sea BiscuitsNot what I thought they were, but we have put a can in the closet for safety reasons. I thought it would be like English Sea Biscuits. They are tasteless not worth the money, VERY disappointed 1Taste great, not sweet not salty but has a nice cracker taste.Wow these things are tasty. I did not think they would taste good since it was primarily for long storage not taste. Food to live not to enjoy. I was wrong, they taste really good and have no salt taste. I can see them going great with soups etc. I like them just as they are. we went through one can, I had 2 crackers and my dogs loved them as snacks. I ended up buying 3 cases for long term storage and eating. 5
